Shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, she volunteered as a humanitarian aid worker. Soon after, she joined the Ukrainian Army and served as a combat medic. Her journey takes her to some of the war’s key battlegrounds: the liberation of Bucha and the Battle of Kharkiv.

Savita Wagner vividly describes what often comes across as abstract and terse in the news: air raid sirens, artillery fire, treating the wounded under fire, and constant uncertainty. She writes about fear and solidarity, about camaraderie, doubt, and determination. Her diary shows what war feels like, how it changes the way people think and act, and what it means for Europe’s political identity.

On January 31, 2024, Savita Diana Wagner was fatally wounded while attempting to rescue two wounded soldiers. Her final messages and diary entries make this book a legacy. They paint a moving, vivid picture of this war in Europe. It stands as a testament to all those who are risking their lives there to defend their country against the aggressor, Russia.

“Eine Deutsche im Ukraine-Krieg: Das Fronttagebuch der Savita Diana Wagner,” Herder Verlag, Freiburg/Br. 2026, 256 pages

https://shop.spartanat.com/en-de/products/eine-deutsche-im-ukraine-krieg-das-fronttagebuch-von-savita-diana-wagner
